Will Real Death Be Anything Like La Petite Mort?

La petite mort. The little death. That post-orgasm feeling.

There’s a French expression, la petite mort, which translates as “the little death” and means “a brief loss or weakening of consciousness.” In modern usage, it refers specifically to “the sensation post-orgasm as likened to death.”

I’ll admit, this expression has never made sense to me. I’ve never had a post-orgasm experience that I’d call a brief loss of consciousness or any sensation I’d liken to death.

Because most of the time post-orgasm, I giggle. I’m not sure why, but that’s what often happens. And I’m not sure what the men I’ve been with thought of my giggles.

But I can’t help it. A joyful feeling bubbles up inside me and escapes through my lips.

So I can't describe what I often experience as a loss of consciousness. It’s more like the joy of feeling completely alive and really good.

Really, really good.

However, there was a time in the back seat of a Jeep in a strip mall parking lot where I experienced something completely different.
