It’s not a necessity to stay alive but it certainly enhances life. I’d add though that within a committed relationship I think it’s an important component for expressing love and staying connected. So to parse the word ‘need’ it may not be a need for existence but one that a person needs to help them feel physically connected to a partner. Hope that makes sense.
